The seller says the razor is professionally sharpened by the people at ASharperRazor.com. Whoever sharpened the razor, they did a great job. Shaving with it is as smooth and effortless as straight razors come.Shave ready is a term used by the wet shaving community to denote a razor that is sharp enough to shave with. What you may not know is that most razors are not sold as shave ready. Unless specifically advertised as shave ready, you are rolling the dice as to how sharp the razor will be. For example, Dovo & Thiers Issard sharpen their razors at the factory, but a good number of people don't think it's good enough to shave with. Fromm razors do not come very sharp. Gold Dollar razors are pretty dull from the factory. Every other razor costing under $100 is not a real straight razor.The RazorThe razor is made from hardened carbon steel. That means it rusts. So, any water drops you leave on it will stain the blade. The edge longevity is on par with every other real straight razors.The brand name is painted on. It's just there. It is what it is. The maker's mark is stamped into the blade fairly lightly. The pins are machine pinned. The scales are plastic with a carbon fiber look. The jimps on the bottom are done by machine and could be better.However, for all it's faults, it's not a $100 razor, nor is it claiming to be. It's a $50 razor. You aren't going to find a shave ready razor for less unless you go antique shop diving and pay someone to sharpen whatever you found.Bottom line: This razor is not an heirloom piece. It is 100% workhorse. But for $50, you get a razor that shaves just as good as razors costing much more.

I am new to straight-razor shaving, and this was my first, entry-level razor. I literally have no other straight razor to compare it to, but I can say from my experience, that it works. Right out of the package, I just stropped it a little, and was able to get a very close, fairly comfortable shave. After a few shaves, I figured I could get a better edge on it, and tried to hone it using my Lansky sharpening kit.That's when I found this is actually a stainless blade, and a little hard to hone. I didn't do it right, and ended up with an actually less sharp blade. This is totally my fault, and not a failing of the blade - but a carbon steel razor would sharpen better and more easily. I got it back into shape, and I can still shave with it, but I'll need to take another crack at honing.As a tool for learning how to do a straight razor shave, this is a good, reasonably priced option. You'll probably want to upgrade before too long, like I do.
